Listening to a management meeting, one thing led to another, and I dug the following out of Google:

"Avoid using utilize to mean simply 'use'. Utilize is best confined to the sense 'put something to an unusual or unexpected practical use': The children made a tent, utilizing the clothes-line and some old curtains. Even in this sense, it is nearly always possible, and more elegant, to say use." -- Hutchinson Encyclopaedia
