Porting a large suite of software from Perl to Java, I expected a total nightmare, but it seems that a large amount of the work in Perl was to do with caching computations and optimizing I/O, and Java is fast enough to simply perform these in real time. What a relief.

I'm just starting to realize how bad my health has been recently, in many many ways. I think it's going to take a lot more care for a real upswing.
