Sue teaches me to read the movements of the opponent, and to react with speed and accuracy. The coach here is teaching me techniques which work regardless of the opponent's movement, using leverage and power. This is challenging, especially with a pommel weapon. I am also learning to hit with opposition into a defence where previously I would have disengaged and hit with distance.

The tactical problem is harder: How to combine this new work with what I am learning in England. Sue is teaching me a style which relies in part on avoiding certain situations. Paul is teaching me to handle some of those situations.

Many things are catching me by surprise. The coach ducks or steps aside. He points. "This is the only point of mass which cannot be removed, Aim here." Flailing, shifting, using the non-weapon arm. "Things like this happen. Keep the point here."
