We are gradually solving our database problems. Server performance is up at least 300% today and possibly more. I am suddenly happier, I feel that my existence is justified.

This is not going to turn into a rant journal. However: PostgreSQL. A well respected, serious database server. It has built in data types for things like inet address, even geometric figures. Unfortunately it's missing the simpler types like "unsigned integer", "byte[16]". It is stupid to have to split a byte[16] down into two int8s just to store it without the 50% overhead of a bytea. But that's what we're going to do.
