First steps in learning a language: Counting and swearing. Then asking for the bathroom, and two beers please. After that, it gets complicated. I have concluded that my french is at the complicated stage, but for most practical purposes, their English tends to be better. I have so far encountered one madame who only spoke french. We conversed largely by gesticulation, since neither counting nor swearing seemed appropriate.
