My bruise was black to start with, then it was a very tasteful purple, which actually suited me. After that it was yellow for a few hours, which really didn't suit me, and now it's mostly blue and red, which is a lot more subtle than the purple.

I had a tremendous amount of energy tonight, my lesson with the coach at the end of the evening went better than any for a long time. I'm nowhere near as fit as I was two years ago, but at this rate, I think I can get there. Must try proper swimming and cycling again soon.

In the light of the news that Obama raised some 40 million dollars in a month:

Does anybody know the size of the election budget for a political party in the UK?

Does one assume that the people giving (any significant amount of) money in either country are considering it a strategic investment? If so, in order to contribute that volume of money to someone who isn't even yet a confirmed candidate for a national election, the return must be considerable.

In parliament today, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Vernon Coaker) announced an objective to "increase the number of drug users in effective treatment". I had to parse that twice, because the way he read it, the objective could easily have been achieved by handing out cannabis.

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm/cmtoday/cmdebate/05.htm - link might break when Hansard records this properly.

Also, Harriet Harman and William Hague yesterday was quite funny:

Mr. Hague: ... She had to explain yesterday that she dresses in accordance with wherever she is going: she wears a helmet on a building site, she wears Indian clothes in the parts of her constituency with a large representation of Indian people, so when she goes to a Cabinet meeting, she presumably dresses as a clown. [ Interruption. ] (This means "laughter and shouting" - S)

...

Ms Harman: I would just start by saying that if I were looking for advice on what to wear or what not to wear, the very last person I would look to is the man in the baseball cap.

There was miscellaneous shouting.

I call this picture "The Cutting Edge of Information Technology Security".

For those who don't know, PhonePayPlus is the new name for ICSTIS, the premium rate telephone (and now SMS) regulator in the UK.
