Task: Compile apps X, Y, Z onto a set of Sparc Solaris servers. Build platform: Intel. Of course I didn't think to look for this mistake until after I'd built GNU make. The whole structure was so messed up (by modern standards) that I reccommended rebuilding separate application trees for Solaris-Sparc, Solaris-Intel and Linux-Intel using the packages at http://www.sunfreeware.com/. However, this now makes the job easy and fast enough for the support technicians so I've worked myself out of a job again.
