I believe that the US recession started when new technology left the US. When the PGP source code books were exported, when you had to download the Linux kernel from Finland, when the US announced that it was closed to certain types of business. When regulatory, taxation and insurance concerns exceed a threshold of sanity.

One does not survive in an economy by closing one's doors to business, and each one of these industries now has a secondary, or in many cases primary home outside the US in a country more accomodating to the requirements of the industry. - US Dominance Set to Wane - US Global Trends Key Report
